SEO, GEO & AEO Explained: Get Cited by AI

Diagram comparing SEO, AEO and GEO and how AI search engines cite sources

Quick answer: SEO gets a page ranked in search results, AEO gets it extracted as a direct answer, and GEO gets it cited inside an AI-generated response. They work together, and SEO is the foundation for all three.

Hi, it's Gaby 💛

A few years ago, "being on Google" meant ranking in a list of blue links. Today, people also ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI answers, and those tools write the answer for them. If your brand isn't part of that answer, you can be invisible even when your website is great. Let me explain it simply.

The three terms, in plain English

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization): ranking higher in Google and Bing using content, links, and technical health.
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): structuring content so engines can pull a direct, quotable answer, like featured snippets, voice results, and AI Overviews.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): earning citations inside answers written by generative AI assistants. The term comes from a 2024 academic paper.

One more thing worth knowing: the terminology has no industry consensus, so the work matters more than the acronym.

Which engines are we talking about?

  • Classic search: Google and Bing.
  • Answer surfaces inside search: snippets and AI Overviews, where the engine lifts a specific block as the answer.
  • Generative AI tools: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Mode, where a language model combines several sources and decides which brands to cite.

And they don't all behave the same: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity don't necessarily retrieve the same sources or mention the same brands.

What actually helps you get cited

Nobody can promise a citation, and I won't either. But the research points to the same priorities:

  • Make sure machines can read your site. An AI can't cite a page it can't crawl, so fix technical SEO first.
  • Build real authority. Research on AI citations finds earned authority from third-party sources to be the strongest predictor, ahead of on-page tweaks and schema.
  • Be consistent everywhere. GEO benefits from consistent information about your brand across multiple relevant sources. This is why your name, bio, and links should match on your website, LinkedIn, Behance, and Instagram.
  • Answer first. Clear, concise definitions help increase AI citations. Every post should open with a short, direct answer, like this one.
  • Back up your claims. Citing sources, adding real statistics, and writing with authority are the tactics research links to AI citations.
  • Use structured data. FAQ and Article schema help engines understand your page.

The good news

The signals that decide which sources AI engines cite are largely the same ones that earn a top-10 organic ranking: authority, content depth, schema clarity, and editorial corroboration. You don't need three separate strategies. You need one strong foundation, built on purpose.
